The Sun Outage is a natural phenomenon that happens twice a year when a satellite and a receiving earth station come directly in line with the sun. The energy from the sun interferes with the satellite's signal, thus affecting the signals received by the earth station. The affected signals result in poor or no reception for the channel which receives its programmes from that satellite via the earth station. StarHub Digital Cable receives most of our international channels via satellite before redistributing them to homes via StarHub Digital Cable's broadband cable network. Satellite transmission is subject to some external factors such as weather conditions, frequency clashes and natural phenomenon, which are beyond the control of the broadcaster. Hence the quality of the programmes on these channels is already affected when they are received by StarHub Digital Cable, before they are pumped through our network to homes here.
It is estimated that the coming Sun Outage will start on 10 Mar and end on 22 Mar 2009. Depending on the locations of the satellites in the orbit, not all satellites will be affected by the Sun Outage. As such, only channels transmitted by affected satellites will experience transmission interference.
